Accepting our Freedom

Jesus reveals to us that our God is the God of

Yes. But we live in a world of No, where sin

defeats us and oppresses our spirits. We drag

the past behind us like MarleyÕs chains in A

Christmas Carol. But we donÕt have to.

The forgiveness of sins is our ticket to liberation. We have the freedom

to ask for and receive this forgiveness. Jesus died to demonstrate this

forgiveness! It belongs to us, and itÕs offered to us with open arms. But

in order to receive it, we have to let go of the bondage of the past. We

have to resist putting our faith in the voices of negativity that tell us Òwe

made our bed and now we have to lie in it,Ó or Òthis is how we were

raised and this is who we are now.Ó That lie comes from the world of

No. We are heirs of the kingdom of yes. Prepare the Word

Ash Wednesday - February 22

insoluble.

a quien aman.

veo necesarias?

6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dubuque, Iowa

You Are Here

Some people feel paralyzed by

moral evil, especially on the social

level, because itÕs so pervasive. We

have to remember that Jesus didnÕt

heal every leper in Israel, but he did

alleviate suffering when he

encountered it directly. We, too, are

asked to do small things: to stay

loyal to our gay child, to stop in at

the local nursing home and visit those who have no visitors, to offer

relief to someone who is a full-time caregiver, take time for a sick

relative, to be generous in our response to those whose need is known to

us.

We have to be willing to look the homeless woman in the face, and to

develop respectful relationships with people regardless of their race,

ethnicity, gender, orientation, religion, ability or social class. The works

of mercy, corporal and spiritual, are a great place to begin. Wherever we

encounter the grip of isolation caused by fear, we can offer the healing

of Christ by our caring presence. Fear is useless, as Jesus once said.

What is needed is trust. Prepare the Word

Jesus Alive: Evangelization

Bring a Friend!

Last week we discussed the Religious of

the Archdiocese and how they have

influenced our lives. We can take a cue

from the sisters, brothers, and monks!

They live in community, pray together,

share their lives, AND evangelize one

another. By knowing Jesus, they bring

others to Jesus. We can do the same in our parish communities.

Coming together in a group to reflect on the Word of God deepens our

faith and strengthens our communities. During Lent, we will have

several faith sharing groups meeting to discuss and relate the Sunday

scriptures to daily life. The Sunday by Sunday resource is used (cost

$4). The gatherings are informal, itÕs OK if you may have to miss a

week, and you can verbally participate as much or little as you like. It is

a faith building experience at your own pace! Bring a friend or spouse!

ItÕs always easier to join something with someone you know!

Two groups will meet starting February 21st: 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM

Tuesday mornings at Visitation Convent. Call Diane Kramer 747-3647.

12:30 PM to 1:30 PM after Mass on Tuesday afternoons at St. PatrickÕs

Rectory (with a promise of a light lunch). Call Susan Dazey, 583-9749.

Want to start a group with friends? Pick a time and weÕll help you do

that! Call Jean Leute, 582-7646. To form others, we must be formed!

Whom can you invite?

World Marriage Day

February 12, 2012

Father, we thank you for your tremendous gift

of the Sacrament of Marriage. Help us to

witness to its glory by a life of growing

intimacy. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness

so we may become more and more one in

heart, mind and body. Strengthen our

dialogue and help us become living signs of

your love. Make us grow more in love with

the Church so we may renew the Body of

Christ. Make us a sign of unity in the name of

Jesus, our Lord and Brother. Amen

Awakening Faith - Lent Program

An exciting program at Resurrection Parish during the Lenten

season called Awakening Faith. We believe it can benefit many

people, particularly anyone who has been away from the

practice of their faith and may desire to reconnect more deeply

with the Catholic Church.

There will be six sessions on basic elements of our Catholic

faith, with opportunities for conversation and sharing. The

sessions will help us explore our faith life, who Jesus is, how

the Church helps us to live in Christ, how the Mass might

engage us more, and how we celebrate Eucharist and

Reconciliation today.

You can invite someone who could benefit from a program like

this. It might even be you. The sessions will be held on

Saturday mornings beginning February 25, 2012,

9:00 AMÐ 10:30 AM in a confidential and comfortable

environment in the Resurrection Parish office. We realize

someone may not be able to make all of the six sessions, but

he/she still can benefit from coming to some of them. For

more information, please call Deacon Tim LoBianco at the

Resurrection Parish office, 556-7511. This year Ash Wednesday

is, February 22.

familias. Pero, Àdonde existe una base razonable y

logica para tal actitud? Parece que Jesus no la

encuentra, porque actua de una manera distinta. No

condicion social o nuestra raza?

sanacion.

Pregunta de la Semana

À En que momentos me he sentido rechazado? À En que

momentos casi he justificado el posible rechazo de

otros por mis propios errores o condicion? ÀEn que

momentos me he sentido tentado a juzgar y rechazar a

otros?

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

No Rest for the Weary

Like Job in todayÕs readings, we often lament that our days are those of

a hireling. And we know we are not alone. As far as we can tell, anyone

working is overextended, and fatigue can lead to despair. The best

prevention is a moment of thanks each day for our many blessings, -

including our messy relatives and our challenging jobs. Gratitude, no

doubt, motivated PeterÕs mother-in-law. Jesus made her well, and she

responded with hospitality. Gratitude is the best antidote for our weary

minds and bodies. ÒA grateful heart is a happy heart.Ó

Prepare the Word

Jesus Alive: Evangelization

World Day for Consecrated Life

Deacon Jim Luksetich gave a great homily

several weeks ago regarding

ÒevangelizationÓÑ bringing others to get to

know Jesus. This Sunday, February 5th, we

celebrate World Day of Consecrated Life.

We give thanks to all the religious priests,

sisters, brothers, monks, and single people

who have consecrated their lives to God and

the Church through vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. They

have brought us and many others closer to Jesus.

In our area, this includes the Cistercians at Mississippi and New

Melleray Abbeys. We are the recipients of their prayer and hospitality.

The Sisters of Charity (BVMs) founded Clarke University and the Sisters

of Mercy (Cedar Rapids) founded Mt. Mercy College. The Presentation

Sisters (PBVMs), Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Family, and Visitation

Sisters were teachers and nurses. In recent years, they are bringing

ÒJesus AliveÓ through diverse ministries.

LetÕs say thanks! Visit, write, or phone a religious who supported you.

Visit the Abbeys to pray. Support their ministries financially when

possible. How will you express your gratitude?

nosotros vamos tambien progresando internamente. Y

Claim Us For Wholeness

All of us have the work of discerning

the spirits that drive us. What

possesses us? Ambition may drive

us, the desire to achieve an advanced

degree or a high paying job. Desire

for security can possess us, a

willingness to do whatever a boss

asks in order to pay the mortgage

and provide health benefits for the family. Alcohol or chocolate or

drugs can possess us, becoming a comfort in our stress or pain more

perfect and pliant than any human friend. Fear can stifle our creative

selves or choke our voices.

The unclean spirits are right to ask Jesus if he has come to destroy them.

The answer is yes. Through healing and forgiveness Jesus claims us for

wholeness. Relationships with Jesus give rather than diminish life.

Catholic Charities Annual Appeal

As we celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the

Archdiocese of Dubuque this year, it is a time to

reflect and express gratitude for the

establishment of social ministry outreach in our

Archdiocese that began with women religious

communities and pioneer priests through the

creation of hospitals, schools and other forms of

social ministry. Over the past 80 years, these efforts have evolved into

an organized structure, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of

Dubuque.

As Catholics, we are called to love and provide help for our brothers

and sisters in need. Catholic CharitiesÕ continued success is dependent

on the volunteerism, financial support and prayers of each of us.

Once a year, Catholic Charities requests your financial assistance

through their annual appeal weekend, this year held February 11-12. A

letter will be mailed to the home of all parishioners who have made a

donation to Catholic Charities in the past, requesting your support for

this worthy cause. Your contributions can be mailed to Catholic

Charities in the envelope provided with the appeal letter. Please be as

generous as you can. If you do not receive a letter in the mail but would

like to make a tax-deductible gift, please visit the website

www.charitiesdbq.org to make your secure online donation or send to

Dubuque Catholic Charities, Archdiocesan Office, 1229 Mt. Loretta Ave.

Faith Formation

Evangelization

Evangelization is the focus of this

yearÕs 175th Archdiocesan

celebration: Jesus Alive!

So what is evangelization? The

meaning is simpler than the word!

It is a term used to describe many

activities by which the Church (thatÕs us) communicates

to the world the saving message of Christ in the Gospel.

Evangelization takes many forms including Eucharistic

and sacramental celebrations. It includes preaching,

missionary ventures, books and newspapers devoted to

the spread of knowledge of Christ.

But thereÕs more. All Christians (not just leaders) are

commissioned to bear witness to the message and work

of Christ, so that others may believe in Him.

Evangelization is both an attitude and an activity! It

should include everyone in our faith communities and

become a goal of everything we do. This can be done

simply by personal witness in oneÕs circle of friends and

co-workers promoting Christian values. Personal

witness includes generous hospitality, sharing what we

have with those in need, always acting with great

charity to all, sharing and living the truth of the Gospel,

and more.

3 How does this relate to your life situation?

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week: January 29 - February 4

The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is

ÒFaith, Academics, Service.Ó

In this 175th anniversary year of the Archdiocese, and

especially during Catholic Schools Week, it is good to

remember that among the first actions of the soon to be created

Dubuque Diocese in 1836, was the establishment of its first

school Ð St. Raphael Cathedral School. Following the opening

of St. Raphael School, which started as an all boyÕs school,

Bishop Loras worked with the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed

Virgin Mary to open an all girlsÕ school in 1843, in Dubuque.

Building on their success, Catholic schools became an integral

component for the spiritual formation of Catholic youth in the

Archdiocese. Countless religious sisters, brothers, priests, and

laymen and women have worked diligently to provide the

best possible Catholic school education to hundreds of

thousands of youth these past 175 years.

The Catholic schoolÕs commitment to faith, academics, and

service does not come without great sacrifice and commitment

from parishioners, parents, and staff. On behalf of all who

have benefited from their Catholic school education and for all

who continue to reap the rewards of a Catholic school

education, I say thank you. The 175 years of Catholic school

success in this Archdiocese would not be possible without

your spirit of sacrifice and commitment.

Have you stopped to see the beautiful books on the History of

the Archdiocese? They are in the Cathedral Center and at St.

Patrick scrip table in the back of church. They are on sale for

$30. You will enjoy the rich history of our Archdiocese - a

history of how all of us have been involved in evangelization -

sharing our faith with others in countless ways.

Reflexi.n Dominical

veces podriamos estar poniendo nuestras esperanzas

DonÕt Quit Your Day Job

Acommon reaction after hearing the

story of the first disciples Ð

fishermen who are told to come follow

Christ and become fishers of men Ð is to

try to imagine ourselves in a similar

situation. There we are on the job, and

Jesus walks up and tells us to drop what

weÕre doing and come follow him. Could

we do it? Would we be willing to quit our jobs just like that to follow

Jesus? But as we make our way through the gospels, we realize that

most of the disciples donÕt stop being fishers. They just end up fishing

fish as well as human beings their whole lives.

This is an important realization for those of us who tend to separate our

faith from our work. Discipleship in Jesus is an all day, everyday

activity. But it doesnÕt require quitting our jobs. We just like to think it

does because then it makes it something we couldnÕt possibly do at the

moment. Naturally, Jesus doesnÕt let us off that easily.

In this era of corporate green and ethical shenanigans, we are being

asked by Jesus to mend our ways and help others mend theirs. ItÕs hard

not to be cynical and think that things will never change. But time again

weÕve seen GodÕs justice prevail. In fact, no one is more surprised than

the prophets themselves when people actually repent of their sins. So

letÕs get to work. Prepare the Word

Parish Stewardship

Gratitude: The Heart of Thanksgiving

Thank you to so many parishioners who have filled out Time and Talent

forms during the past several months. Parish staff, committee members

and volunteers have done their best to be in contact with those who

signed up for various ministries in our parish. At the least, if you were

able to give us your e-mail, you are being contacted regularly to invite

you to participate in some way.

Sometimes we hear, ÒI signed up to do something and no one contacted

me.Ó That may be true - but if you signed up please consider that you

are indeed invited, encouraged and needed in the ministry you are

interested in. You do not need a personal invitation to do ministry. Yes,

personal attention does wonders and sometimes that is the only way

people might respond But we need you - call us!

How has the Holy Spirit guided you in thinking about how you can be

of service in our parishes? Maybe it is helping with coffee and donut

Sundays, just once! And maybe it is to work on a parish committee or

with Religious Education. So many people have given so much and

everyone is grateful. ÒLoving God, we ask you to guide us in our

discernment, and show us how to be faithful in the plans we make, the

actions we take, and the love we share on our pilgrim way. Give us the

courage to find wisdom in our sacrifices, joy in our generosity, and hope

in the compassion we show, especially to those most in need of your

comfort and care.Ó Call us!

Reflexi.n Dominical

empezar a seguir a Jesus.

E estar atento constantemente a

no tienen consecuencias? ÀMe doy cuenta de las

implicaciones de mis decisiones diarias, por pequenas

que parezcan?

Padres:

Cuando estas estresado tu imaginacion puede ayudarte.

Making Our Decision

Those of us with an inherited faith

may feel a little cheated at the idea

that we never got the chance to decide,

once and for all, that this Jesus was for

us. Faith in God may never have been

a question for many of us. Becoming a

Catholic may have been more for the

sake of convenience than a burning

desire to celebrate at the LordÕs Table. Maintaining church membership

may be more about habit than conviction. And to all of us, in whatever

situation we find ourselves, faint or fervent, Jesus walks into our lives

today and asks, ÒWhat are you looking for?Ó

What is our answer? Do we want Òreligion as usualÓ, something

comforting and unchanging and unchallenging? Or do we want to

know, as the disciples did, where Jesus is headed? To their question,

Jesus replies only: ÒCome, and you will seeÓ. Come Ð donÕt just stand

there, donÕt expect things to stay the same. If we want to see where

Jesus is headed, we have to follow where he is going. ÒOur God is a

walkinÕ God,Ó as the old spiritual reminds us. Discipleship demands

that we are willing to move out of our complacency and familiar

comforts and ask new questions of ourselves. It will necessarily mean

change and sacrifice. If Christianity is more than a name to us, we have

to come and see where Jesus is headed. Prepare theWord

Thank You

The Family of Rev. Monsignor Joseph O'Brien wishes to express their

gratitude for all the kindness shown to us during the time of his wake

and funeral. A special thank you to Msgr. John McClean, Father Daniel

Knepper, Sr. Ruth Jackson and the entire Cathedral staff for organizing a

beautiful wake service and a memorable funeral Mass. Father Joe

would have been very, very pleased as were we.

Thank you Everyone for Lessons and Carols!

ultimos anos. Es una sociedad en que el compromiso

duradero y estable parece no tener mucho lugar.

Seek the Holy One

It was crucial to MatthewÕs story

that the religious leaders lost the

light, and outsiders sought and found

it. We churchgoers have to be careful

about assuming that God belongs to

us because we know where to find

him! Even the Magi made a mistake

when they got to Judea. They went

to the largest city and to the palace of

the king, thinking thatÕs where a young king should be found.

Prophecy redirected them to little Bethlehem and the home of a pretty

humble family.

When we seek the Holy One, it cannot only or primarily be in the place

where we expect the holy to be found. Church is a good place to begin,

but itÕs only one destination on a road that could take us anywhere.

The smallest and lowliest spot imaginable is where God often hides a

revelation of glory. If we stick to the familiar route where religion is

comfortable and un-challenging, we may miss an epiphany further

down the road. Prepare the Word

Cathedral Meals Ministry

This weekend and next weekend, we will have sign-up sheets in the

Cathedral Center to invite parishioners to participate in the meals we

will serve monthly in 2012 at the Rescue Mission and First

Congregational. Our first meal in the new year will be at the Rescue

Mission on January 15. If you have not been a part of this ministry

before, please consider serving in this parish outreach. Cathedral and

St. Patrick parishioners respond so generously to many needs - it is a

response to JesusÕ way of life which continually challenges us. Thank

you to all.

The dates we will serve at the Rescue Mission are Sundays at 12:00

Noon: January 15, February 19, May 27, September 23, October 21 and

December 9. The dates we will serve at First Congregational Church

are: March 22, April 26, June 21, July 26, August 23, and November 15.

With All the Saints in Glory

The Christmas eve death of our

beloved former pastor, Msgr. Joseph

OÕBrien, came as quite a shock, in spite

of FatherÕs poor health. He fell in his

apartment at Villa Raphael earlier in

the week, spent two days in the

hospital and then went to Stonehill for

temporary respite. He died just after

noon on Christmas eve. Father OÕBrien was pastor at the

Cathedral from 1993 - 2002. He enjoyed his time here and

inspired so many with his wonderful homilies, quick wit and

storytelling, his enjoyment of everything going on in the

parish, and his care and interest in his parishioners. When

celebrating his 40th anniversary of ordination here at the

Cathedral he said, ÒI love the life God gave me.Ó We will miss

him and know he is continuing to love his new life with God

and all the saints. Thank you for everything, Father OÕBrien.

ÀNos atrevemos a

imaginado? ÀEstamos dispuestos a aceptar esa

posibilidad?

Feast of Holy Mother of God

ÓAnd Mary kept all these

things, reflecting on them

in her heart.Ó How like a

mother to do that. Every

exciting and harrowing

detail of the first days of

her childÕs birth are seared

in her memory to be

recalled and pondered in

the days, years, and

months ahead. Like all

parents, her emotions will

run the gamut of sheer

terror of all that is in store

for her little one to overwhelming joy.

It is in these significant moments of life Ð giving birth, marrying, falling

ill, or losing someone we love, that each of us encounters the deepest

mysteries of life Ð its joy, enlightenment, sorrow, and glory. Mary,

through the witness of her life shows us how to experience these

mysteries with strength and grace. Prepare the Word

We wish to express our appreciation, thanks and gratitude

to you not only for the good wishes and remembrances

received during the holidays but also for your

thoughtfulness, cooperation and generosity throughout

2011. We pray that God may continue to show blessings

and graces upon each of you and your loved ones.

We are grateful to everyone who helped to make

Christmas such a special time for our parishes - for the

musicians and wonderful music, for all minsters, for those

who did the Church environment and for those who sent

flowers and donations. Each and all contribute to the

reverence, dignity and hospitality of the Christmas

liturgies. We are strengthened by the service of one

another. Many blessings,

Reflexi.n Dominical-

quienes somos y toda nuestra vida.

hiojs? À Por que bendiciones especiales estamos

agradecidos hoy en el comienzo del 2012?

Bulletin for Week of December 25, 2011

Christmas Sunday

Dear St. Raphael and St. Patrick Parishioners and Guests,

We, the staff of St. Raphael Cathedral and St. Patrick Church, rejoice

with you as we celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas and begin

a new year of grace and blessings. This year the Archdiocese of

Dubuque celebrates its 175th anniversary. Archbishop Hanus said in

his homily for the opening celebration: ÒThe task before us is the

same as the mission which Bishop Loras accepted in 1837: to take the

gifts we have received gratefully and share them generously with

others.Ò We begin a year to reflect on the theme: ÒJesus Alive

throughout 175 Years.Ó

Jesus is alive in our parishes. You have responded with generosity

and a willingness to serve our parishes in so many ways. Thank you

to all who have ministered to our communities at our Eucharistic

liturgies: musicians, choirs, servers, ushers, greeters, lectors, and

Eucharistic ministers help make our liturgies a prayerful experience

for all.

Thank you to all who serve on our Pastoral Council and parish

committees and join in so many ways in our parishes. Your work to

make our parishes vibrant communities is very important. We invite

all of our parishioners to continue to respond generously in the new

year to keep Jesus alive in our parishes, our downtown community

and our world.

We welcome all of our guests this Christmas weekend and those

with us who may not come to church regularly. We are glad you are

here. If you are seeking a parish community, we invite you to

continue to worship with us and share in our many ministries.

May Christmas for everyone be filled with the presence of Jesus

and may we welcome Him in all the challenges and joys of the New

Year.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

Contrary to popular belief, these are not the twelve days

before Christmas, but are the twelve days from Christmas

until the beginning of Epiphany - the coming of the wise

men bringing gifts to the Christ child. Whatever way you

celebrate, consider this a time to make a clear

differentiation between the secular celebration and the

liturgical season. DonÕt let children be confused about

what Santa, Frosty and Rudolph have to do with Jesus.

Make it clear to your children/grandchildren that the

secular celebration and our season of Advent and

Christmas are different. Make Christmas about Christ and

make it special for your family.

Our cultureÕs celebration of the holiday has many positive

aspects we sould appreciate and affirm, especially

concerning good will, family, compassion and artistic

excellence. We donÕt need to despise all aspects of

Christmas to celebrate in a Christian way. Enjoy these

twelve days of Christams!

Our annual Epiphany party for parents

New Sacred Vessels at the Cathedral

The pewter chalices and cups, plates, ciborium, pitcher and

basin that you see at Mass are a gift in honor of the

Archdiocesan 175th anniversary and are a beautiful addition

to our worship space. They will also be used at St. Patrick.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal tells us: ÒAmong

the requisites for the celebration of Mass, the sacred vessels are

held in special honor, especially the chalice and paten, in

which the bread and wine are offered and consecrated, and

from which they are consumed. Sacred vessels are to be made

from precious metal. #327, GIRM

One way the Archdiocese planned to celebrate this milestone

in our faith journey is to have a commemorative book that

chronicles our history. This full-color coffee table size book

ÒChrist - BearerÓ

Mary, this Christ-bearer is bringing to

Elizabeth the presence of the Messiah for the

first time. And it has a dramatic effect on her

and on the baby John in her womb. Neither

would ever be the same again.

With Christmas only days away, we are challenged to bring that very

same presence to all whom we will touch this holiday season. Mary has

become the embodiment of what we are called to be and do as

Christians in our service to one another. Prepare the Word

There is a Star

On this night, the light of Christ shines anew.

The light of Christ shines in our lives, our homes,

our workplaces and our neighborhoods. The

light of Christ shines in the kindness we show

one another. In our moments of generosity. In

our acts of courage. In our exercise of virtue.

And in our acts of wild abandon for the love of

God. The light of Christ shines in the eyes of those we love, and in the

hearts of those who love us. The light of Christ shines forth from you

and me, and from all of us who gather to become the body of Christ.

We live in a mixture of light and shadows. On this day, we are

witnesses to the truth that the light has come into this world and the

darkness cannot overcome it. All the darkness in the world can never

overcome even the smallest light. And the light of Christ is no small

light.

May we, in our joy and anticipation and our Christmas hope, dedicate

ourselves this year to seek the light. To follow the light daily by the

practice of our faith. To let the light of Christ shine through us to

everyone we meet. Prepare the Word

New Sacred Vessels at the Cathedral

In honor of the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Dubuque,

Archbishop Hanus has given a gift to the Cathedral. The pewter cups,

plates, ciborium, pitcher and priestÕs chalice are a beautiful addition to

our worship space. Their size and substance are so appropriate for the

Cathedral. They will also be used at St. Patrick.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal tells us: ÒÒAmong the

requisites for the celebration of Mass, the sacred vessels are held in

special honor, especially the chalice and paten, in which the bread and

wine are offered and consecrated, and from which they are consumed.

Sacred vessels are to be made from precious metal. In the Dioceses of

the United States of America, sacred vessels may also be made from

other solid materials that, according to the common estimation in each

region, are precious, for example, ebony or other hard woods, provided

that such materials are suited to sacred use and do not easily break or

deteriorate. This applies to all vessels which hold the hosts, such as the

paten, the ciborium, the pyx, the monstrance, and other things of this

kind.Ó #327, 328, 329. GIRM 2

Winter Solstice - December 21

This is the day when the sun is up for the shortest

time in the northern hemisphere. It our longest

winterÕs nap! Yet in this long night, we look

toward the brightness of Christmas. From now on,

each night will be a little shorter and each day a

little longer. This year December 21 is the

beginning of Hanukkah for our Jewish brothers and

sisters. May these feasts of light we celebrate help

us to be a light for one another. Light some candles

in your home tonight. Be the light for those around

you.

Wednesday Evening St. Patrick Meal

Thank you to all who supported the Bake and Craft Sale at St.

Patrick. Almost $700 (over $100 more than last year) was raised

to support the Wednesday evening meal served each week at St.

Patrick. At the last St. Raphael - St. Patrick Social Justice meeting

it was agreed to send a letter to each parish in Dubuque

requesting more assistance bringing food and providing regular

donations to help St. Patrick with their weekly meal to those in

need in the downtown area. The committee will gather and

report the responses from the parishes. This meal continues to

be an important outreach for all of our parishes. Thank you for

your generosity.

Christmas Poinsettias

If you wish to donate a Christmas

Poinsettia plant for St. Raphael or St.

Patrick in memory of a deceased loved

one, we welcome your donation of $20 for those plants. Please

place your donation in an envelope with your name and the

in a bulletin during the Christmas season. Thank you.

175th Archdiocesan Anniversary

The Archdiocese of Dubuque was established July 28, 1837 and

therefore will reach its 175th year in

2012.The observance is an occasion for

us to look back in gratitude upon the

heritage of faith given us by our

ancestors who built churches and

established parishes, schools, hospitals,

and charitable organizations.

The celebration of our 175th

Anniversary is a time not only to

celebrate the great gifts and blessings that God has given to our

Archdiocese, but it is also a time to look ahead to the future and

continue the work that the Lord has entrusted to us in building

up the Body of Christ, the Church, in northeast Iowa.

One way the Archdiocese planned to celebrate this milestone in

our faith journey is to have a commemorative book that

chronicles our history. This full-color coffee table size book will

feature more than three hundred pages of our rich Catholic

heritage. Half of the book will focus on the history of the

Archdiocese with the other half focusing on the parishes,

religious orders, and institutions. These books will be on sale

next weekend in the Cathedrdal Center and in the back of St.

Patrick at the scrip table and also at the parish offices. They are

$35.

Archdiocesan Trip to Rome

Archbishop Hanus is inviting members of the Archdiocese to join

him on a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land from March 12

to March 24, 2012. This pilgrimage is part of the 175th

Anniversary celebration of the Archdiocese. For a brochure with

more information, please contact the parish office or the web site

of the Archdiocese: www.arch.pvt.k12.ia.us. You may also call

Jackie Doser at Travel Headquarters (800) 383-0563.

Jeff Baker celebrated the Rite of Welcome into the

Catholic Church on Sunday, December 11, the same day

his third son, Ryan Jeffrey was baptized. We congratulate

Jeff, Melissa and sons Luke and Beau.

The Pieta State at St. Patrick was recently renovated.

Thank you to Louis Wagner who donated the funds in

memory of his wife, Betty.

Reflexi.n Dominical

18 de Diciembre 2011- 4 to Domingo de

Adviento

anuncio.

humanos seamos semejantes a Dios.

historia, haci.ndose hombre pobre y creyente.
